| is that when one says 'Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA.OKLAHOMA/CAROUSEL/SOUND OF MUSIC' or Lerner & Loewe's MY FAIR LADY/BRIGADOON etc is that one is telling the truth. The names wrote the entire show. Rodgers and Hart's as a moniker only covers music & lyrics, as does COle Porter's .... etc The opera norm is composer's name only. The real problem is that the Gershwins did not write PORGY AND BESS. George Gershwin approached DuBose Heyward to make an opera out of the play he wrote with Dorothy. At some point Ira was brought in to write three lyrics and collaborate on/doctor three others, That's it. It's Gershwin And Heyward's PORGY AND BESS, While the Heyward estate has obviously agreed with the new title now imposed on every version of this work - it strikes me as an insult to the man (and his wife) who wrote the 1925 novel, and then the hit play, and then the libretto and lyrics to PORGY AND BESS. Not a rannt. A fact |
