Oklahoma ending question -- Spoilers! Beware
Posted by: aleck 09:46 pm EDT 06/19/19

I saw Oklahoma today and thought it was terrific.

But the ending bothered me considerably. Perhaps this has been discussed here previously and I didn't see it because of spoiler warnings. But in the original script, which I have in my hand, Jud comes in to "kiss the bride" and then give a "present to the groom." The kiss is violent and the "present" is a sock to Curly's jaw followed by a fight where Jud pulls out a knife and then falls on it, killing himself. In this new version, the "present" is a gun with which, from where I was sitting, Curly uses to basically kill Jud in cold blood. Then, he is quickly declared not guilty and the blood-splattered Curly and Laurey start and everyone else start joyfully singing about a beautiful morning -- with the dead Jud in full view.

I was with this production 100% until that moment. What is this production trying to say about Jud's fate at Curly's unprovoked point blank shooting of someone (albeit unpleasant), who is not armed with anything, and then is left off without a moment of punishment.

Is this supposed to be some type of cynical interpretation of how the winners (Curly) always win and the disliked losers (Jud) always lose in America no matter the circumstances?
