| My cousins are in town and the teenager is such a Broadway fan that she is only applying to colleges in the NYC area. She asked me about the 7:30 curtain time for The Ferryman last night, and why it didn't start at 7. I said that people had to eat dinner after work and get to the theater so that not everyone likes a 7:00 PM curtain. But what we wondered is, do Broadway houses have to pay more for shows that come down after 11:00? (With a 7:30 start, it comes down at 10:45, and if it started at 8, it would end at 11:15). What about the kids in the cast, do their rules prohibit them ending later (that's the case in the UK I believe). Anyway, we're interested in all this behind the scenes detail on union rules, producers thinking etc so many thanks in advance for any light you can shed. Also, they loved the play, and since I hadn't seen since London, I was grateful this cast still gets the job done. | |

| The evening performances on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday begin at 7. In addition to whatever labor rules apply, I believe the performances on Wednesdays and Saturdays begin at 7:30 (rather than 7) to allow extra time between the matinee and evening performances. | |

| Most of the union contracts (Equity, Local One stagehands, Local 802 musicians and others) allow for a three-hour show, regardless of when it starts (as long as it starts after noon and before midnight). SO the 11:00 PM overtime applies to shows that start at 8:00 PM. | |

| I do think there are added costs if a show runs after 11 am. | |

| Are there added costs if the show runs past 11pm, if it is more than 3 hours, or both? | |

| I don't know the answer, but they famously trimmed the running time of Les Miz in the original run to save on overtime. I think it was 3 hours and 15 minutes and became just shy of 3 hours. | |

| They would have started les mis at 730 instead of trimming. And did that happen when it switched theaters? Beauty and the beast cut cast when switching but also shut down for 6 weeks for union rules. |

| Yeah I was wondering why they didn't just start earlier, but it feels like early curtain times were not done much back then. Maybe the start time wasn't the issue, but that it was over 3 hours. The change happened well after the show moved from the Broadway to the Imperial. In 2000, in fact, just a few years before it closed. As the grosses dipped they were looking for a way to reduce running costs. |

| Earlier curtains (7-7:30) have become so normalized of late that it's hard to remember a time when they weren't at least part of the equation. In reality, they were only introduced with any real regularity around 2003, when producers conjectured that a 7 p.m. start time would be more enticing for midweek theatergoers. | |

| Yes I remember when that was rolled out! For some reason I thought it was Nancy Coyne's idea, but she isn't mentioned in the article. I could also be remembering incorrectly. I wonder if longer shows back in the old days (haha) ever started earlier, like Long Day's Journey Into Night. I really like that an earlier curtan time gets me home earlier. But struggle with it when I want to meet a friend(s) for dinner before, since I don't finish work until 6pm. It's impossible to do anything but a rushed meal. First world problems, I know! |
