You can't go wrong with Sardi's.

Except the food is terrible.

Bond45 is right across from the Marquis. Or a block over on 46th: Joe Allen.

John's Pizza on 45th.

I used to avoid Sardis like the plague but have been there several times over the past year and the food is not all that bad. They also have a pretty reasonable three course prix fixe pre theater dinner.

Bond 45 is not bad either and I prefer sitting downstairs where the bar is located. Not at the bar, but at a table.

First time I ate there, shortly after it opened, everything was great. I especially remember, of all things, a perfect focacio. The next two times, everything was lackluster and the service brusque. The third time I visited, I was served "spaghetti carbonara" with a white sauce {!}, a few pieces of pancetta and a poached egg. Travesty enough but made perfectly awful as it was tepid in temperature. I won't go back. But your experience might be different.

I don't agree that the food is terrible at Sardi's. Do you actually feel that way because of personal experience? I think the food at Sardi's is fine.

I am considering Sardi’s. I had a good meal there a year ago. But I wouldn’t mind trying something new.

Nothing wrong with Sardi's restaurant and resent the comment made. Sounds like an angry fired employee to me posting.

Resent? Angry fired employee?

I never cease to be amazed at the depths some people go to in dismissing the reality that someone simply does not like what they like.

But you didn’t say “I didn’t like the (what you ate) the day I ate there.” You implied it was a fact that all their food is terrible.

My recommendation is Virgil’s BBQ on W 44th St.

Virgil's isn't quiet but the food is good enough.

"But you didn’t say 'I didn’t like the (what you ate) the day I ate there.' You implied it was a fact that all their food is terrible."

Agreed. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion of the food at Sardi's or anywhere else, but "the food is terrible" is a very blunt, flip and unhelpful comment. Whenever people say that about a restaurant, I always wonder exactly what they mean. If they mean that their meal was undercooked or overcooked, or if the ingredients weren't fresh, or if there were some other major flaws in the meal, I would say "the food is terrible" is a justified comment. But if it's just a question of not liking the way their tomato sauce is spiced, or something like that, then I think the phrasing could be a lot better.

For the record, I have had a wonderful overall experience every time I've gone to Sardi's because of the ambience, the decor, the crowd, AND the food. The place is an institution and an all-too-rare memento of New York theater history, and I would hate for anyone to be turned off of the place just because someone claims "the food is terrible." (P.S. If that were true, I highly doubt the place would have survived all these years, not for just its location and its history.)

Well, it's survival is not a straight line. It was sold to others for awhile. Given the present

Here's what Zagat guide writes: "Sure, it's mainly a “tourist joint”, but this circa-1921 “showbiz institution” is touted as a Theater District “must-experience” thanks to its celeb caricatures on the walls and “Broadway stargazing” in the seats; if its Continental fare and career waiters seem “passionately outdated”, fans insist that's part of the “charm.”"

A review from YELP.

"A frozen in time classic due for a full remodel.

"Worst steak I can remember in a restaurant. Tough, chewy, bland, and not even an inch thick. Just awful. The chicken looked like a grey plastic simulation.

"Vegetables were terrific, including the mushroom infused mashed potatoes.

"Downstairs maître d' a cardboard cutout, upstairs checking his phone, so we had to wait. Waiter was exceptional.

"Have a drink maybe, but don't eat at this tired old relic."

OR

"We went after a show matinee on a Sunday evening. Place was packed. Very noisy but that was expected.
One of those places you go to once just to say you have been there.
The steak tartare was excellent. But everything else just o.k.
So many other choices in this city that never sleeps."

That reported, others felt differently, enough so that the average Yelp score was three-and-a-half stars.

The food is about as ordinary as you can get. Expensive for the pedestrian food. Sloppy service (serving 1 person an appetizer but not the rest of the table, forgotten orders). If you stick to basics (hamburger, salad) you can get a decent meal. Yes, it has history and atmosphere but their menu is in serious need of updating and quality control. For several years they coasted along without a head chef. My cousin ate there for more than 70 years, going out of loyalty even the food was so mediocre. I’m glad you’ve had good meals there.

Thanks for your detailed feedback. I've never had bad service there, and while I agree there's nothing special about the food, I think that's a long way from "terrible." I also don't find the place particularly expensive for the epicenter of the theater district.

Saw this on their website :
Before or after seeing a show at the Marquis, theatergoers can dine at one of the fine restaurants located throughout the hotel.

Not sure what they are but might be worth looking at if you need something close.

I've been to Osteria al Doge, across Times Square on 44th, several times and always enjoyed their Italian menu. If mobility problems are an issue, say so and request a table downstairs, not in the mezzanine.
