| Yeah I was wondering why they didn't just start earlier, but it feels like early curtain times were not done much back then. Maybe the start time wasn't the issue, but that it was over 3 hours. The change happened well after the show moved from the Broadway to the Imperial. In 2000, in fact, just a few years before it closed. As the grosses dipped they were looking for a way to reduce running costs. |

| Earlier curtains (7-7:30) have become so normalized of late that it's hard to remember a time when they weren't at least part of the equation. In reality, they were only introduced with any real regularity around 2003, when producers conjectured that a 7 p.m. start time would be more enticing for midweek theatergoers. | |

| Yes I remember when that was rolled out! For some reason I thought it was Nancy Coyne's idea, but she isn't mentioned in the article. I could also be remembering incorrectly. I wonder if longer shows back in the old days (haha) ever started earlier, like Long Day's Journey Into Night. I really like that an earlier curtan time gets me home earlier. But struggle with it when I want to meet a friend(s) for dinner before, since I don't finish work until 6pm. It's impossible to do anything but a rushed meal. First world problems, I know! |
