I think what makes this exclusive is Heidi Schreck doing this run, as opposed to the later tour.

There's an article in this morning's Chicago Tribune hinting or suggesting that Shreck should or could strike some sort of deal with Goodman Theatre in order to make the Broadway production part of an upcoming season. Something similar was done in past years with I Am My Own Wife and van Hove's A View from the Bridge.

I was under the impression that she would be performing in it at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, but I see now on the website that she is credited as author but that casting is still to be announced.

Bill, in San Diego

It's very strange she isn't doing the tour

The play is written by her about her, starring the character that IS her, and it talks intimately about her actual family and their history.
Beyond that, I'd think for a performer/writer at her level, being out there with the play, having the intimate personal experience the play creates WITH her and audiences of theater and film and tv audiences around the country would only benefit her bankability and the strength of her name and brand. Beyond that, it's very odd for the national tour of this specifically personal and biographical play in which she plays herself to NOT have her in it. I get that the play has to and will live on without her in the role, but after the national tour of the original production... or so I'd have thought.

I also think that, like you, many relatively aware theater goers will be way less excited to see this without her in it.

That is odd. Curious to see how it is received....

It's especially odd to me because Schreck does not have a listed understudy in the Playbill, and I'm guessing it's because she doesn't actually have one. My understanding is that Equity insists on an understudy unless the performer is irreplaceable, either by being a star (Schreck is extremely talented, but not a star in that sense) or by being so integral that she is not replaceable.

So the producers are saying she's irreplaceable and they don't need to pay for an understudy but that she's replaceable for a national tour.
