AIN'T TOO PROUD or THE CHER SHOW?
Posted by: KCforBway 12:17 pm EDT 06/21/19

I'm looking to fill the lost slot on my theater trip for Labor Day weekend and I've narrowed it down to these two shows. For those who have seen both, which would you recommend? I truly think I would enjoy both shows as I have enjoyed bio-musicals like JERSEY BOYS and BEAUTIFUL. Maybe I'm just looking for what the strengths are for each show . . . I'm leaning toward CHER SHOW as I am a huge fan of Ms. Block, but I hate planning to see a show due to one performer (who I know has missed numerous shows) -- been disappointed many times in the past with absences.

Anyway - I'd like to hear the thoughts of my fellow posters. I appreciate your input!

I doubt Cher will last. But it might stay open for Labor Day weekend. It brought in $800k last week which can’t be much over weekly costs.

I’ve seen both and I would pick the show you like the music more. early Cher or temptations. The book on both are bad—not nearly the quality of jersey boys or beautiful.

If those two are the only choices and Cher has closed, I suggest using the time and money for a nice meal instead.

Do that only if you are fine missing a good show!

I agree with dramedy about the book for Cher - although Stephanie is great. However, I disagree about ATP. I thoroughly enjoyed the show including the book. That being said, I also agree that you should pick the show with the music you prefer

While I know I'm in the minority, this is an easy one, especially if you are a Stephanie Block fan - it's THE CHER SHOW, hands down.
While this may sound dramatic, the success of Ain't Too Proud is one of the all time greatest Broadway mysteries for me. I thought it was just awful and to think it was nominated for Tony awards and even won some is shocking to me.
You asked for thoughts from your fellow posters, so without going into more details about why I didn't like it, let me just say go see THE CHER SHOW.
By no means is it the best show on Broadway, but if you're looking for something entertaining with great costumes, great songs that you already know, terrific performances, this is a nice light and frothy, fun night in the theater.

Definitely leaning toward CHER - especially as there are some great discounts out there for the show. Question - does Stephanie J. Block do all the performances? If I wanted to optimize my chances to see her, should I go to a Saturday matinee, Saturday evening, or Sunday evening (as there is on Labor Day weekend)? Those are the three possible times I could see it on my trip.

Well, you’ll surely have a much easier time getting tickets for The Cher Show, and for a lot less money. That may or may not tell you something.

Hey, KCforBway, sorry to take this thread off topic, but do you know whatever happened to the musical, “Harmony, Kansas,” which came out of your area? It was given a world premiere in San Diego several years ago to positive reviews, but I haven’t been able to find news about anything more recent in online searches. I thought that you were aware of the show, but I’m not 100% certain of that.

Thanks for any updates you can provide,

Bill, in San Diego

The librettist for "Harmony, Kansas" is an acquaintance of mine. I know he has some other projects being produced (another musical, "Men with Money" was recently done regionally -- Atlanta, maybe?). If I hear of other productions of "Harmony, Kansas" I'll post something here.

I didn't think either one was very good, but I preferred the Cher show.

I actually left Ain't Too Proud at intermission. I just couldn't sit through another jukebox musical where they narrate their story to the audience. And it seemed so low energy to me. I felt the same way about the Tony number. I can make it through many versions of "bad", but dull and boring is hard for me to stick around for. I do want to praise the cast for being extremely winning and talented. It's time to stop trying to replicate the success of Jersey Boys (which I LOVED) and come up with something new.

I guess over at Cher everything was just a little bit more fun to me. I'm not sure why people don't talk more about the other two Chers. I thought Block was fine but liked the others just as much. The big problem to me with this one is that every time they would get to a moment where a song needed to comment on the story, they were stuck with some Cher song that simply couldn't do what was required. Because they are pop songs not meant to carry a story or develop character! LOVED seeing Emily Skinner on stage again. Honestly the first thing I did when I got home was listen to my Emily Skinner albums...

Yes, it's funny how all the attention is on Block. I actually preferred the young Cher, Micaela Diamond. I found her the most exciting thing on the stage. I see a big future for her.

Overall, I did not care for the Cher show for the reasons you mention.

Both shows remind me of the "special" stuff PBS saves up for pledge week.

I am not a fan of either, but the comparison is extremely inapt.

I think it's helpful. I offered a third choice since the two choices first offered are like comparing tweedledee and tweedledum.
