Supposedly, there is a new Playbill 20% discount for the JRB Sondheim concert

Someone posted on a mailing list ... I don't see where it is on the Playbill site, but if anyone wants to try it and can't find it, email me for the code.

(I would be totally po'd if I had bought full(er) price at the beginning, which is what I definitely would have done if I were able to be there.)

Products are marked down all the time, and dynamic pricing for entertainment is increasingly common. Whether we like it or not, this is the environment in which we purchase at our own risk (too soon or too late).

I was very surprised by how expensive tickets were priced for this, since the event doesn't really sound like a life-changing experience. I wonder if prices will continue to drop.

I got it in a Playbill Club email this morning.

I don't get the releasing in blocks for this show. The Town Hall isn't that big a house, and I would've thought that even at benefit prices the whole thing would've sold out in a few hours at most.

I don't get the releasing/pricing judgment but I think we around here tend to overestimate the nature of demand for something like this beyond this board. It has a very 92nd St Y feel to it.

Jason Robert Brown concerts are not like 92nd Street Y events, though I enjoy those! You can be assured the musicianship will be first rate. And there will be a lot of exciting performances. The show is a benefit so I’m not sure why there are so many complaints about the pricing.

Honestly, based on the marketing, I was not alerted to a lot of exciting performances. Lenk's is the only name I have seen. (She's wonderful, of course.) My sense (and it sounds like I'm wrong but to the point of why it is not selling better) is that it would be a chit chat punctuated with some songs sung by her, maybe with JRB at a piano. (Hence the 92Y mention.) In fact, the photo they are using of JRB and SS looking like they are bored and about to nod off does not exactly convey what you are describing. As to the benefit aspect, there are lots of them, and I don't think people generally buy tickets to snoozefest-marketed shows for that reason unless they are closely associated (something not especially likely in this case). Otherwise if I want to support the Brady cause, I'd send them a check. (which I have at times, but that's another matter.)

Also added Shoshana Bean, Rob McClure, Joshua Henry and a few surprise guests. Sondheim may have called up a few friends.

That is very much what I pictured. I presumed the draw was primarily the chance to see Sondheim in person while he's still with us.

This probably won't change your view, but one additional attraction is that the concert will include a 16-piece orchestra.

These things change my view of what will transpire, but not of the marketing fail that I was talking about.
