| I felt that some in the current American cast slipped in and out of their accents too often. Even when they were in accent, it sounded quite distorted. One glaring example is Jack DiFalco as Shane...there were times I swear he was doing a Slavic/Russian accent! I remember him from Torch Song and he frustrates me a bit because I like the fire and personality he brings to his roles but it seems like he stops just a few steps short of perfectly nailing the part. Perhaps it's youth and inexperience, but he needs to put in a little more effort to polish and refine his portrayals instead of relying on raw emotion which is what seems to be the case (sometimes very unharnessed energy). As for the play itself, I absolutely loved it. I generally like large ensembles that give different players moments to shine and this certainly fit the bill. I am still trying to process the ending and trying to decide how "necessary" it was. The evening already packed a fulfilling, satisfying range of drama and emotions that my first reaction to the ending was that it was excessive. It almost seems like Butterworth was thinking "well just in case any of you fell asleep through all that, here's a splashy action packed Hollywood ending to send you home with" and delivered an ending he hoped would please audiences instead of trusting in the satiety of the previous 3 hours. |

| I finally saw Ferryman also with this cast a couple of weeks back. I love the play; it’s truly a rare great one. You have a point regarding the accents. I didn't have quite the "pronounced" experience you did with them, but the accents were a weak point that led me to wonder what difference the original cast might have made. The ending was big and brash, to be sure, but it felt deeply satisfying to me. As in, this was the (proper) end that the story led to in order to speak its truth; which I took to be something like: so long as we go on living our lives in the vitriol and hatred of past failures, we won't live at all in any meaningful sense; the god-awful truth is that even the priest joins us in hell when we construct our worlds solely around the evil in it. |

| I felt the same about the ending at first. But after thinking about it, and discussing it with friends, I think I understand where he was going. How else could it have ended? They (both sides) weren't going to let it go. I felt the accents harder to discern with the original cast, but I didn't have trouble (I used the assisted listening devices, as did my friend the second time, who has no hearing problems). |
