| Jesus Christ. The whole joy of acting is to take on a character who is different than you. I would hate to be limited to gay roles and I have no problem with straight people telling gay stories. I’m happy when our straight allies are comfortable enough with their own sexuality to take on a gay role. | |

| But there are SOOOOOOOOOO many straight characters, and relatively few openly gay characters. And the reality is that a lot of openly gay actors are not given the chance to play straight characters, and there are certainly some who, incredible actors as they are, aren't going to pass in a movie as straight. So why not, at this point in time, give a chance to an out gay actor to play an out gay person especially on a global stage in a high profile film? It's not WRONG for him to cast a straight person like Corden, but it's a sad and ENORMOUS missed opportunity for Murphy to support and expose a gay actor, and a potentially life-changing opportunity that has not been given to a gay actor (already famous or relatively unknown, like Brooks himself). |

| I can understand yo point about the casting for the Prom. But to suggest that some gay actors can't pass as straight seems besides the point. There are so many gay actors who can and have. Whether you consider Rock Hudson, Tyrone Power, etc. in the movies. Nathan Lane was wonderful in the Iceman Cometh. Matt Bomer on White Collar. There are just so many more to mention... too many to mention here. Perhaps for those who can't pass as straight, it's more a question of the range of their acting talent than their sexual orientation. | |

| The reason I mention the case of the non-straight-passing gay actor is because this role is for a rather flamboyant or "recognizably gay" character. Why not let a gay actor who doesn't "pass" have a chance at one of the characters they CAN succeed in? Maybe this is a pointless thought and argument... either way, when no one these days is supposedly allowed to write a story that isn't theirs or play a role they didn't live, why is one of the few lead gay characters being given to a straight actor? Again it's not that it's WRONG it's a question of why? Was there no gay actor, famous or not famous, who could do it? Because casting a straight actor is almost like saying that. And we obviously know that isn't true. | |

| In a recent Hollywood Reporter roundtable, the out and outspoken Billy Porter expressed how ''enraging'' it is when straight actors are habitually cast and honored for playing gay roles, when the opposite rarely happens. "If 'flamboyant' wasn't in the description of the character, no one would see me, ever, for anything, which wouldn't be so enraging if it went the other direction, but it doesn't," said Porter. "Because straight men playing gay, everybody wants to give them an award: 'Thank you for gracing us with your straight presence.' That gets tiresome. So here I sit, I can't get the gay parts, I can't get the straight parts." That was ballsy of Porter to call out the inequality of opportunities, especially when Porter was sharing a roundtable with Hugh Grant and Richard Madden. The two of them had won recent acclaim for portraying LGBT characters, respectively: Jeremy Thorpe, a closeted politician in ''A Very British Scandal,'' and John Reid, Elton John's ex-manager and lover in ''Rocketman.'' Porter said he almost threw in the towel on acting until he got word to audition for a new TV show, co-produced by … Ryan Murphy. Porter didn't get the part he went in for, but convinced them he'd be right for ''Pose,'' and so another role was created for him: Pray Tell. Even though it's not a level playing field, it just goes to show that sometimes it pays off to speak out. |

| Always worth asking the question: who would you have cast? And is it ever specified the orientation of the Sieber/Rannels role? |

| What's ironic is that Murphy has such a laudable record of being a champion of diversity and inclusivity with his various projects. ''Pose,'' which just kicked off its 2nd season on FX, is a groundbreaking showcase for trans performers. And he launched the Half Initiative to create more opportunities for women and people of color behind the camera. |

| It's not like they cast Dwayne Johnson or Jason Momoa for Pete's sake, Corden will be fine. Are we going to have to start casting only Irish-American Dolly Gallagher Levis, or Ukranian Jews for Tevye? Where does the pigeon holing of actors into only playing their ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc., stop? |

| I think it stops when the playing field is even -- I don't think it is. There are plenty of good reasons in the blog and in this thread that are better than I can articulate, but if you think it doesn't matter, you think it doesn't matter. I don't get your first comment - Corden is more acceptable acting as a gay man than the other two? |
