The winners of the eleventh annual JIMMY AWARDS® were determined and announced last night, Monday, June 24, 2019, at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. This life-changing event was hosted by Tony Award® winner Ben Platt and presented by the Broadway League Foundation.

The coveted Jimmy Awards for Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor were presented to Ekele Ukegbu,The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance (New York, NY) and Ethan Kelso, Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards (Logan, UT).

This year, the entire show was streamed live on Facebook and YouTube and was brought to you by The Broadway League Foundation and 2017 Tony Award winning Best Musical Dear Evan Hansen. Apples and Oranges Arts was the livestream and video production partner. The official media partner was WABC-TV. The ceremony is still available for viewing for a limited time.

The Jimmy Awards are named in honor of the late James M. Nederlander, Chairman of Nederlander Producing Company of America. Both winners were presented with a check for $25,000 to further their education. They will also be eligible for a four-year merit and need-based scholarship to attend NYU Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama, contingent upon acceptance into the program.

Six finalists each received a $5,000 scholarship toward their future education:

Matthew Hinson (Charlotte, NC) and Tasha Partee (Woodmere, NY) each received the INSPIRING TEACHER AWARD sponsored by WELLS FARGO for the encouragement and inspiration that led their students to win the 2018 Jimmy Awards for Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor.

At the ceremony GEORGE SALAZAR (Be More Chill) presented a production number which was a tribute to musicals about musicals. Jimmy Awards alumni KYLE SELIG (Mean Girls) and STEPHANIE STYLES (Kiss Me, Kate) presented the Week in Review Video. Last year’s Jimmy Awards winners and current Broadway stars ANDREW BARTH FELDMAN (Dear Evan Hansen) and RENEÉ RAPP (Mean Girls) presented the Inspiring Teacher Award presented by Wells Fargo which features their respective teachers. Also making a special appearance at the ceremony was DEREK KLENA (Jagged Little Pill) who introduced another production number, a celebration of the 15th anniversary of Wicked on Broadway.

Judges were comprised of notable theatre professionals including Tony Award-winning producers, award-winning casting experts and industry professionals. The evening of the performance, winners were selected by Nathan Flower, Montego Glover, Alecia Parker, Marc Platt, Tara Rubin, Tom Schumacher, Stephen Schwartz, and Bernie Telsey. Preliminary judges who evaluated nominees prior to the ceremony included Gabriel Barre, Robert Cuccioli, Nathan Flower, Stephanie Klapper, and Seth Sklar-Heyn.

Monday’s production was directed by Van Kaplan and choreographed by Kiesha Lalama. Michael Moricz was the musical arranger and conductor, and Mary Jane Brennan was the writer. All four have been with the Jimmy Awards for all 11 years of the program. The Wicked tribute was arranged by Ben Cohn with special guest Director/Choreographer Wayne Cilento.

The annual Broadway-focused talent showcase featured performances by all 86 nominees and solos by select finalists. Their debut on a Broadway stage followed eight days of rehearsals and private coaching with faculty at NYU Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama and other professionals. Students also attended a performance of Dear Evan Hansen, including a talkback with the cast.

Student performers qualified to compete in the national program by winning top honors at regional high school musical theatre awards competitions presented by Broadway League member performing arts centers. Over 1,700 high schools and 100,000 students participate in these annual events. Since the inception of the Jimmy Awards/National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) program in 2009, the program has been a catalyst for over $2,000,000 in university and conservatory scholarships to deserving young performers. Several student participants have already been cast in Broadway, Touring and West End productions.

The NHSMTA are presented by the Broadway League Foundation. Founded in 2009 by Nederlander Alliances LLC, Pittsburgh CLO, and Broadway Education Alliance (BEA), NHSMTA's mission is to raise the profile of musical theatre in schools, recognize dedicated teachers and inspire the next generation of performers and enthusiasts. DEAR EVAN HANSEN The winner of six 2017 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Dear Evan Hansen features a book by Tony Award-winner Steven Levenson, a score by Academy Award, and Tony & Grammy Award-winning composers Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, and direction by 4-time Tony® Award nominee Michael Greif. The Grammy Award-winning Original Broadway Cast Recording of Dear Evan Hansen produced by Atlantic Records, was released in February 2017, making an extraordinary debut on the Billboard 200 and entering the chart at #8 – the highest charting debut position for an original cast album since 1961 – and went on to win the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album. A deluxe version of the cast recording, including six bonus tracks and a pop cover from Katy Perry of “Waving through a Window: is now available digitally. Declared “One of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history” by the Washington Post’s Peter Marks, Dear Evan Hansen opened at the Music Box Theatre to rave reviews on December 4, 2016, where it’s broken all box office records and has struck a chord with critics and audiences alike. The first national tour is currently underway with performances scheduled across North America, and the show’s first international production is now playing at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre, with a West End production to open on November 19, 2019 at London’s Noel Coward Theatre. The Broadway production recently celebrated its two-year anniversary with a special donation to the Smithsonian, where the show’s iconic blue polo and arm cast will now be part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC.
