And I thought Pretty Woman was a bore but thoroughly enjoyed ATP

As they say in golf, horses for courses.

I think the bottom line is that if you enjoy the music of The Temptations, you’ll have a good time at ATP, in spite of any weaknesses the book may have. And the choreography really is good, as Trujillo didn’t copy their steps but reimagined them as they might be performed today (according to him).

I haven't seen the show. I watched what was on the Tonys. Truth is that it's not kind of show, but I do like The Temptations. And I think that people who like The Temptations and like the songs they did might well hate the show. They basically did simple choreographic moves when they performed. What they did in movement did not overshadow the song. At least in the hyperactive stuff shown on the Tonys, it seemed like the songs were barely incidental to what was supposed to be dazzling movement.

I saw the show, and what was on the Tonys did not really represent it well. I agree that the Tony number seemed hyperactive and distracting. That isn't how I remember the show. Not to say I thought the show was good. I thought the book was terrible (with some truly cringe-inducing lines). And the projections were...not my favorite. Very Des McAnuff, and not in a good way. But hyperactive/distracting movement wasn't the problem. I think the music comes through well enough in the show, and probably people who are less critical than me wouldn't care that the projections are largely just names of US cities, shown different ways, over, and over, and over....

It's good to hear it's not all like that. In fact, re-reading the linked article, which I read after the Tonys, I see that Trujillo made a point of it not being all like that (although he still makes it sound like a lot of it is like that).

Still, I think it's interesting that you say, "I think the music comes across well enough in the show." I would hope it comes across at least well enough. Anyway, I've never seen Jersey Boys or Beautiful or any of these bio-catalog shows. They just don't interest me. Actually, I think a good show or movie about The Temptations might be more interesting to me than a good show or movie about The Four Seasons (haven't seen the Jersey Boys movie either) or Carole King but it doesn't sound like this is it. And it's not as if I have the money to see very much nowadays.

Probably many who like the Temptations but might hate the show are just avoiding the show. By this time, I think those who like cover-band style jukebox musicals know they like them and go when the music is in their nostalgia wheelhouse. This one appears to be slickly produced, so they're probably happy with it. There are a lot of people who appear to like that kind of thing. More power to them.

People who like those shows help keep talented people employed, and that's good. I'm not someone who believes that we'd necessarily be seeing more shows that would be more to my taste if some long-running hits didn't run so long nowadays. Not that we can be sure yet how long this show will run, but it is doing very well, as broadwaybacker mentioned, and I would imagine it may well run for at least three or four more years (and quite possibly a good deal longer than that).

Agreed (even if I know I'd hate it, and I think it's not a real musical).

It's a bit unfair in my opinion for you to speculate that people who like the Temps and their music might hate the show, not having seen it. Perhaps that's true, but the show is selling out every seat, the reviews were very good if not excellent for the most part and word of mouth, at least based on what you see and hear while leaving the theater seems to be very strong. So since you say that you like The Tempations, give it a chance and maybe you'll really enjoy yourself. And I doubt you'll conclude that the songs were "barely incidental ".

Well, to defend myself (and you did not misstate what I wrote), I will just emphasize I said "might well hate the show," rather than "would." Again, you didn't say that I said they would hate the show, but I just want to emphasize what I wrote. So I don't think it really was unfair. If I had said that people who like The Temptations would hate the show, that would be very presumptuous on my part, and I wouldn't write that.

I'm just not interested in these bio kinds of catalog shows. And if I were more interested, the hyperactive choreography seen on the Tonys would still be a turnoff for me. Perhaps it's not representative of what's generally in the show choreographically, but there was a quote I read from Trujillo that did make it sound like he generally made the choreography a lot busier than what The Temptations did. I know a lot of people like that sort of thing. I don't.

I’ve seen temptations on tour

I like some of their songs. I just felt proud was a bore and not very creative just having a narrator telling the story. And if someone is posting about other shows compared to proud, I tend to think KC isn’t a huge fan of temptations and just likes a few songs like me.

Pretty woman also has some good songs, but I just liked the show overall and enjoyed it. It’s not great art and it did well in the fall and has slowly lost its audience during the spring. It will do well on tour.
