Although it's well accepted that the Leading Actress/Actor Tony does not have much box office pull, this is one of the soonest closings after the Tonys for such a winner for a musical in a while. I think the last one to close faster was when Christine Ebersole won for Grey Gardens, which closed on July 27 of that year.
I also don't have much interest in seeing Ain't Too Proud, although I'll get to it at some point. I just don't find the idea of seeing a re-creation of a concert with none of the actual original performers to be all that compelling. I know that there is more to the show than just simulations of concerts, but that seems to be a hefty portion of most biographical jukebox musicals. Beautiful is one of the few such musicals that didn't seem to have a large concert component. I'd much rather have some attempt at an actual storyline. |
