As soon as I saw the notice and cast

I thought “well someone has $3.5m to lose”. The Daniel Craig/Rachel Weisz was a hot movie star cast. It did recoup $2.6m investment in less than 14 weeks. But it had a $10m advance before it started. I doubt this cast will have much advance.

I know that London success doesn't automatically translate into Broadway success - but this has just finished a sold out 13 week West End run - albeit in a theatre with about 250 fewer seats than the Jacobs. Apart from a limited number of cheap seats for the under 26s and those on job seekers allowance (an initiative Jamie Lloyd has done for many of his productions) there were hardly any discounts across the run. And we've not been short of production of Betrayal here either - there's one about every five or six years - the previous one (at the same theatre) starred Kristin Scott Thomas.

I think you’re underestimating Tom Hiddleston’s “Loki” appeal, especially with audiences who may not traditionally go to the theatre.

I think the minimal-chic direction will attract the Van Hove crowd.

I have no idea what that means (yes, I can Google), but I'm hoping to get to this one. I really like this play, my favorite (and most accessible to me) of the Pinter plays I've seen, and haven't seen it in years.

Loki is the character he plays in the Avengers universe

It's also my favorite Pinter , though unlike you, I did see the Craig-Weisz-Spall production

Ah, thanks. So this one will be starry but not as tough a ticket because everyone's tired of it? :)

I think this one will not be as tough a ticket because no one here is on the same plane as Daniel Craig, and the crossover audience is limited.

As he was a few years ago. The new bond movie will change that. And performing with his wife was a big plus in casting that we don’t have in this production.

And Charlie Cox is Netflix's DAREDEVIL, so the Marvel energy in this production will be high. I imagine it will be heavily promoted to MCU fans.

This is so not a play for the Marvel crowd. In fact, a lot of its energy is through the use of Pinter pauses. I saw the original Broadway production with Blythe Danner, Raul Julia and the standout, Roy Scheider. It's a good play, and the film version is also quite good, but I think word of mouth among Marvel fans who buy tickets will more than likely find it too slow moving without green screen CGI and lots of fast cuts to different locations and without buildings being blow up.

I have to disagree. I have a daughter studying drama at Tisch and she and all of her friends are bright, enthusiastic, voracious theatre-goers AND very into MCU ("into" is an understatement.)

Yes, they are young, like lots of folks who like Marvel, etc. Plus these particular students are also studying drama, where Pinter should be studied. That's not a huge segment of the general population in terms of overlap. I have a nephew studying theatre at Steinhardt, and he likes animation like Spongebob, is not really into superheroes, and mostly goes to musicals, unless assigned a non-musical or if friends overwhelmingly suggest something.

What's your source for the overlap of Marvel fans and Beoadway fans? You're speaking incredibly authoritatively- and dismissively - for someone who isn't providing any evidence. Are these actual green-screen and blown-up building addicts you're referring to, or are you making an assumption about millions of people based on your own opinions for why people go to those films (I go for the epic stories, strong jokes, compelling performances, and subtle hints of queerness)?

I honestly don't know how well this will sell. I do know that Tom Hiddleston is damn sexy, and I've loved him in work both high brow and low. And I know that the high price of a Broadway ticket excludes most of the people who go to Marvel films, though not all. That's all I can say definitively on the subject.

No one, not even people paid boatloads of money to figure these things out, can speak authoritatively on the subject. It's the theatre: you do your research, you make your best assumptions, you check your gut, and you hope for the best. What I have said, and what I think the person you are responding to has said, is that there is not a substantial natural crossover. But when we are talking about a broadway show, we are assessing what buttons will need to be pushed for this to be a success. As I have written here many times, a producer cannot put all of their eggs in one basket. If they do it write, they will do their best to sell tickets to every conceivable market, from hardcore Pinter fans to Hardcore Marvel fans, to people who think the actors are damn sexy, and anyone else they can convince this is a must see. Several people have gushed over the production. Believe it or not there is a market made up of people who go to see that which others have gushed over.

I share your skepticism that this show will succeed, but not for the reasons that began this sub-thread (that people who go to Marvel films are stupid and only want to see things blow up). I'm not sure the play has aged well for an American audience, and while Hiddleston would make me more curious to see it than the last cast, I'm not sure he's enough to make me pay even TDF prices, particularly with how drab that set looks.

But I do think Hiddleston is well-known for projects other than "Thor"; I always think of "Midnight in Paris" and "The Night Manager" before "Ragnarok"... now, if Elizabeth Debicki was also in this, that might get me in the theater. I'd like to see them paired together in real life.

I think you are eliding two notions in your first part. I don't share your assessment of the show (nor do I decide on shows based on sets) but I agree this will have a hard time succeeding, and I note that notwithstanding your disinterest, Craig drove the advance for the prior one.

It's perfectly possible to enjoy both Marvel movies and Pinter plays. My being entertained Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in the X-Men films didn't in the least hinder my appreciation for their performances in No Man's Land. But perhaps you lack that sort of intellectual flexibility.

Do you purposely go out of your way to write in an insulting, snotty, and alienating tone, or does it just happen naturally? Does it serve you well?

As always, it is not about you, or the person you responded to, or any of us. Whatever intellectual flexibility the two of you may or may not have, there is no evidence that the TYPICAL Marvelista possesses that superpower. Calculation is not snobbery. It be silly to pretend there is a lot of crossover.

The comic writers, too. I was lucky enough to count Len Wein (decades long career as writer at both Marvel and DC, creator of many of the later X-Men, including Wolverine; member of the Comics Hall of Fame) as a close friend, and Len was an avid theatre fan. He and many of his colleagues saw damn near everything on Broadway in the years Len lived in NYC.

At a memorial for Len at our local annual science fiction convention, most speakers talked about Len's comics work. I spoke of his love for theatre.

well, and that does not surprise me in the least. When I first met Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa he was working at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington DC. And I am sure you can appreciate that the sum total of all the comic book writers of whom you speak would not be sufficient to make a single Wednesday matinee a success. :-) Well, maybe at the Helen Hayes. :-)

Of course. And a lot of those whom Stan Lee deemed "True Believers" don't care a fig about theatre. But there is some overlap. I can speak more authority about the related field of science fiction and fantasy publishing/writing/general fandom. Plenty of theatre buffs.

(Not enough, alas, to convince any of the sf publishers to buy my time-traveler-saves-Gershwin novel, though.)

I think Hiddles will draw them in. The screening of his CORIOLANUS that I attended some years back sold out--and on his name, because you can't say it was for the material.

I think I have made my point and you have made yours. I'll just point out that selling out a screening is not on the scale of (let's say) the $12mil this is going to need to take in, at a minimum, to be a success. But I'll repeat the chorus of my song: we shall see.

You're an exception, obviously as well as others. A lot of young folks like Marvel, and there's a good chance they'd be bored by Pinter. I wasn't thinking of you; however, since you assert yourself and try to insult me and others on a regular basis, there must be a number of reasons you never show yourself at an ATC get-together, and it's been discussed by others, not your to advantage.

I have been to an ATC get-together. The 'sport' of bad-mouthing those who are not in attendance -- which you seem more than eager to cop to -- is ample reason not to return.

I've overheard discussions (my words were "it's been discussed by others") and have participated in some in trying to figure out the character of some of the more colorful posters who usually don't show up. That doesn't mean bad-mouthing, just that we don't necessarily like what they post or how they express themselves. But, there are plenty of fine people to talk to who do show up.
