Brantley on Working does it again (a slight spoiler in a comment on spoilers)

I remember how outraged a friend of mine became when Mr. Brantley in a review let out something specific about a production that ruins the effect in a play for future audiences, in that case, that the set flies apart at the start of Signature’s Curse of the Starving Class (accompanied by a picture). Well, read his review of Working in which he ruins a rather wonderful moment at the end the current version of Working that very pleasantly added tales from City Center employees — at the very end of the show, a curtain rises revealing that the set as a facade of City Center. What’s most frustrating, in the next to last paragraph, he gives praise to this touch without revealing the exact effect . Then he adds two sentences that give the surprise away.

I can only be happy that he is not someone with whom I attend theatre. I can only imagine what he would whisper in my ear as the production progresses.

I'm surprised that no one has caught the mistake about "Fathers And Sons" - it was written by Schwartz, not (as Brantley states) Carnelia.

Funny that when you reveal it - gratuitously if you're trying to warn people away from Brantley's review - it's "a slight spoiler," but when Brantley does it it's an outrage....

His job is to write thorough reviews, not to protect potential audience members from spoilers. And he was not the only critic who mentioned the opening effect in CURSE. Any time someone reads a review of a production they haven’t seen, they run the risk of learning something they might not have wanted to. I doubt anyone could write a review without including something that someone would consider a spoiler.

You know what? It's still better than a review of a professional production of Working that I did about 5 years ago, where one of the critics actually reviewed a different version of the musical entirely, given some of the details they mentioned (songs, scenes, and characters that didn't exist in the newer version we did). Did said critic even go to the performance?? I was, and still am, stunned by that.

I believe so. And I don't believe this is someone who usually would make that kind of gaffe - usually a very responsible critic. Which is why this seemed extra odd.
