She had been trying to change the criteria for people applying to the school so that they need a certain academic average to even be considered for admission. Historically, the quality of the audition or the portfolio for potential visual art majors was the critical and most important criteria for admission. As an alum, I think that should stand. We had such wonderful talented people from all over the city, from the poorest sections to some rich kids (who might otherwise have gone to private schools) who wanted to have a place to develop their artistic abilities. Academics were certainly given their due, and sometimes kids blossomed in them when being allowed to express themselves through their chosen artistic field. Otherwise, tutoring and different remedial classes might be offered to those who still struggled. Certainly honors and AP classes were offered, and I myself ended up graduating from an Ivy League school, and many others went on to college. But Ben Vereen himself said that he wouldn't have been admitted if he had to have a certain academic record back when he went. At LaGuardia, these were all kids who wanted to be in this school. So talent should be the most salient reason for admitting someone. If kids want to be there and deserve to be there based on their audition, they will seek out help and find a way to graduate. Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech and Stuyvesant, among others are there chiefly for academics. LaGuardia, like those other schools, still has a very small percentage of acceptances, but its emphasis and atmosphere has always been different.
