Of course, just watch the film of the "The Matchmaker" and you'll see the wonderful Shirley Booth as Dolly Levi just enter the restaurant and be shown to Horace's table without too much ado or fuss.
But the title song, especially in Gower Champion's staging, is a great number, and frankly, for years and years, it still works! It gives Dolly a fabulous entrance in the second act; plus without it, Dolly would only really have "So Long Dearie" as a musical number in Act 2. (I'm not counting where Ethel Merman's 2 added numbers might have been when she did the show). |
