| I think it's clear that "Pore Jud" (the title in playbills for the original production) was meant as a comedy song. It's a disturbing song, too. The whole scene is disturbing. It's disturbing in Green Grow the Lilacs. It's almost like a scene out of Pinter, just in a different time and place than Pinter's plays take place. Curly is manipulative, but Jud is a dangerous, murderous sociopath. These are not sophisticated people. No one has said to Curly, "Maybe if people were nicer to Jud, he'd be different." Curly hasn't read articles on psychology, although he knows how to be manipulative. He thinks he's smarter than Jud, and he's right, and he's using his unsophisticated but innate intelligence to try to win. But that doesn't mean that the song isn't funny, if darkly funny, just as creepy scenes in Pinter are funny. | |
