But I think that some of the reason why the actors in the original Pacific Overtures didn't get much career boost was because it was an ensemble show. A Chorus Line was a vastly bigger hit, but also basically an ensemble show, even if three cast members won Tonys. But only a few people in A Chorus Line got much of a career boost from it. And I think that in most Sondheim shows, only one or two cast members ever got much if any career boost, and often they were people whose careers were doing pretty well already. I can name a lot of people who got major stuff to do in Sondheim shows and then kind of disappeared.

None of which is to suggest that it's not true that actors of Asian descent have historically had very few career opportunities. I think the surprise is that a couple of people from Pacific Overtures did go on to do a lot of television and film work, but I think that might have happened for those people even if they hadn't been in Pacific Overtures.
