We have one of these sorts of companies tucked away in the northern reaches of San Diego County. It’s called Moonlight Stage Productions, and it produces full-scale musicals outdoors in a large Amphitheatre during the summer months. They always have a full theatrical orchestra of 20-30 players, and they don’t skimp on the size of the ensemble, either. Offerings this summer were “The Producers,” “Matilda,” “West Side Story,” and “Victor/Victoria.” Next summer, the company’s 40th season, will feature “An American in Paris,” “Something Rotten!” “Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” “Ragtime,” and “Kinky Boots.” Moonlight is always competitive in the annual theatre awards, and its presence has encouraged the development of other professional theatre companies in its area.
