Was the Smitty understudy the rather strikingly named Silver Saundors? I saw her myself as Smitty in 1970 at Westbury Music Fair with Morse, Vallee and a whole bunch of vets of various How to Succeed companies, including Justine Johnston (whom I would see again less than a year later in Follies).
To my sorrow, I remember nothing at all about the performances, although I remember a couple of odd things about the experience, including a terrifying fall suffered by the Hedy, Joy Claussen (the first Broadway replacement), just as she reached the stage for her curtain call after running down the aisle, probably wearing high heels. She got right up and seemed fine, and I think she was fine, but it was scary. |
