Theatre is a living and breathing art
Yes, it is. And the meaning of that oft-slung (but true) cliche is that if you have something to say on the stage about the state of the contemporary world, or about anything else, you are always perfectly free to write your own new play or musical. Misappropriating to yourself the works of deceased artists who preceded you, because they could write better plays or songs than you can, and because their titles are famous and likely to sell better than anything you're going to write, is not "living and breathing art" but grave-robbing. Writing a new show is living and breathing art. |
