Why doesn't Sondheim give permission to have Bobby as a gay (or bi) man?

It was originally cast with Anthony Perkins, who was bi though closeted to the public, and taken over from Dean Jones by Larry Kert, who was gay. It might make sense that a single gay guy who is somewhat closeted who hangs with married couples is dating, but not particularly smitten by the single women he dates. Or perhaps he really likes one of them, but because he really prefers men, he doesn't want to commit. Maybe this scenario is just too close to Sondheim for him to give his permission, given his attraction to Lee Remick?
