I waited until the first Assassins recording (1991) to finally buy my first CD - and at that point I was using my roommate's CD player. The year after, I moved into a studio apartment and finally bought a CD player.
Funny about Les Miz, though - I only had the cassette version originally - which started with "At The End Of The Day," no Prologue. So when I first saw the show, I was surprised to hear all this extra music at the beginning lol. I have a friend who was involved in the original tour, who couldn't believe this when I told him - I had to dig the cassette out and play it for him. ;-)
It was the other way with Nine, where the cassette version had the whole "Grand Canal" sequence and maybe one or two other things that neither the LP or the original CD release had.
