The Royal Shakespeare Company Production of
THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
the New Re-Imagined Production of Shakespeare’s Comedy
to Play its U.S. Premiere Engagement at the Kennedy Center
Directed by Justin Audibert
May 6–10, 2020
in the Eisenhower Theater
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announces that the Royal Shakespeare Company’s acclaimed new gender-reversed production of The Taming of the Shrew will play the Eisenhower Theater, May 6–10, 2020.
Director Justin Audibert turns Shakespeare’s fierce, energetic comedy of gender and materialism on its head to offer a fresh perspective on its portrayal of hierarchy and power. In this re-imagined 1590, society is a matriarchy and Baptista Minola is seeking to sell of her son Katherine to the highest bidder. Cue an explosive battle of the sexes in this electrically charged love story.
“As with their acclaimed presentation of Hamlet at the Kennedy Center in 2018, the RSC continues to deliver inventive, re-imagined new productions of Shakespeare’s works, examining how these plays speak to our contemporary world. I am delighted to be continuing our long relationship with the RSC and cannot wait for our audiences to experience this re-gendered new Taming of the Shrew,” said Jeffrey Finn, Vice President of Theater Producing and Programming at the Kennedy Center.
The Taming of the Shrew is currently playing at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon through August 31, 2019 and will play at London’s Barbican November 5, 2019–January 18, 2020.
Tickets for the Kennedy Center engagement are currently available as an add-on for subscribers and as a part of select subscription packages. Tickets will go on-sale to Kennedy Center Members November 5, 2019 and to the general public November 12, 2019. Casting for the Kennedy Center engagement will be announced at a later date.
