Same. I'm not sure how Wolfe's direction could have "hampered" it... besides that it seems he was a key part of the piece's development into what it is, his direction was pretty straight forward. Lyrical but pretty much presented the show as written without a lot of directorial and conceptual flare added to it, which I found to be a strength in his direction. And he certainly directed the hell out of the acting.
But who knows - I can never see the production live again so I can only comment from 15+ year old memories and some video of it.
