I would rather dialogue be written in a way that accurately indicates the way the character would really speak and say words (or versions of words) if they have a specific dialect, especially one not common or found anymore. I see how it might seem condescending but I also don't know how it would. If I write a character who says "ain't" I wouldn't want to not write "ain't" because it isn't proper language. And there's a big difference between a character who says "fishing" or "fishin". I also wouldn't want it left up to any particular cast and director to figure out the dialect and pronunciation on their own and hope they do it well or research it.
I say if you're capturing how people talk, capture it! |
