|KingSpeed, my memory jibes with yours. Idina Menzel's Tony win was a surprise, especially since the Times review of ''Wicked'' was a love letter to Kristin Chenoweth. Also, if there were a frontrunner for Best Actress in a Musical, it would've been Donna Murphy, who won at the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards that season for ''Wonderful Town.''
Going into that Tony night, ''Wicked'' was the odds-on-favorite. It had won 6 Drama Desks, including Best Musical, Director, Book, Scenic Design and Costumes. Interestingly, Outstanding Lyrics went to Stephen Schwartz for ''Wicked,'' but Outstanding Music went to Jeanine Tesori for ''Caroline, or Change.'' … So, ''Avenue Q's'' Tony win for Best Musical was quite the upset.
