|Again, you're using a word you didn't think I should be using, which elevates your opinion to a quantifiable score. I don't understand the logic of calling my use of it out but using it yourself and the defending its use in the same exact context.
Deservingness aside, it is ignorant to think most of the voters saw both performances. Oscar voters are famous (like Tony voters I think, but worse) for not seeing everything and voting based on hollywood friendships, politics, or ad campaigns, or who deserves it at whatever point in their career. I think very few voters probably saw Requiem which was not nominated for any other awards except for Burstyn. I bet almost all saw popular favorite and multi-nominee Erin Brockovich.
Either way, I am sure many felt that Julia was a big shining movie star who deserved recognition for the achievement of being that rare kind of star, and if any performance of hers was going to be worthy of an Oscar it was going to be/might as well be this one. Couple that with Ellen being in a movie no one saw with no other noms, and having already won one Oscar and had FOUR other nominations, I am sure many felt that wasn't her year and was Julia's. That doesn't mean it is based on a side by side comparison of the performances that year and the actual competition for who, of their performances that year, deserved recognition for most outstanding acting. I think many more things played into it. Which is why it's such an apt comparison to Tonya and Idina (including that Tonya had won a Tony already and Idina hadn't).
