| I thought Avenue Q's marketing push with the tagline "Vote Your Heart" and the party at John's Pizza for the road producers was fantastic. I know many of the regionals felt duped when they announced the Vegas "Sit Down" a few weeks later, but when that failed, the Ave. Q people regrouped and managed to run a successful tour for several years, and certainly the Vegas failure didn't seem to hurt regional/tour interest. In the audience that night at the Tonys, the number of people wearing "Vote Your Heart" buttons was unlike anything I had seen before or since. It felt like a David and Goliath moment. Wicked, of course, has managed to weather its Best Musical loss just fine. And I agree--Idina's win was a palpable surprise. Not unwelcome, but an upset. |
