| (with the possible exception of 2010 - the only nominee I saw that year was Fela! which was great, but I had assuming I'd vote against an original musical (Memphis) in favor a jukebox when I haven't even seen it) 2017 Won: Dear Evan Hansen Should Have Won: Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 2013 Won: Kinky Boots Should Have Won: Matilda 2009 - I would have tied Next to Normal and Billy Elliot. Really can't decide on this one. 2006 Won: Jersey Boys Should Have Won: The Color Purple (as revealed moreso in the revival) / Runner up: Drowsy Chaperone, but I know it had no chance against the slick entertainment of JB 2005 Won: Spamalot (as fun as it is and as well produced and cast as it was, it's disposable) Should Have Won: The Light in the Piazza 2004 Won: Avenue Q (though I'm very glad it won over Wicked) Should Have Won: Caroline or Change 2000 Won: Contact Should Have Won: The Wild Party (still one of the most brilliant musicals I've ever seen, and a cast like you couldn't dream of) 1999 Won: Fosse Should Have Won: Parade 1998 (but I understand this one) Won: The Lion King (best director, sure, best scenic design, of course...) Should Have Won: Ragtime 1992 Won: Crazy For You Should Have Won: Falsettos 1991 Won: The Will Rogers Follies (won off the exceptional Tommy Tune staging I think) Should Have Won: any of the other three, but in my order: The Secret Garden, Once On This Island, Miss Saigon 1988 Won: The Phantom of the Opera Should Have Won: Into the Woods 1984 Won: La Cage Aux Folles Should Have Won: Sunday in the Park with George 1978 (though I don't feel too strongly about this) Won: Ain't Misbehavin' Should Have Won: On the Twentieth Century 1972 Won: Two Gentlemen of Verona Should Have Won: Follies 1969 *(this would be a tie for me maybe but if I have to choose) Won: 1776 Should Have Won: Hair (this year hurts especially since there was no Best Score award to recognize Hair that way at least, or to nominate Zorba, one of K&E's 5 best scores IHMO) 1960 Won: The Sound of Music AND Fiorello Should Have Won: Gypsy 1959 Won: Redhead Should Have Won: Flower Drum Song 1958 Won: The Music Man Should Have Won: West Side Story (MM is amazing, but sorry, WSS is just a better/bigger work of art) |
