| Of the three Broadway productions of this play that I have seen (I skipped Mike Nichols') this is by far the most effective, successfully weaving comedy, sadness and stiff-upper-lip lack of sentimentality. I don't usually appreciate plays being approached as sparely as this, but Jamie Lloyd directs with vision and trust. Simple as his work appears, it is often strikingly, unexpectedly beautiful to look at, and his fine cast has earned the trust he has placed in them. |
