I was also pretty bored at THE LION KING and felt that they could have done without the whole extra hour of material that was added for the stage (IIRC the film run less than 90 minutes). There's no question in my mind at all that RAGTIME is a superior show in every way, except in sheer spectacle. But from the moment it opened, THE LION KING just captivated everyone. I didn't see it until quite a few years later, right before the move out of the New Amsterdam, and couldn't figure out what the fuss had been all about. Sure, the staging is inventive, but, after the opening number, you've really seen most of what that has to offer.
