Have some overreacted to what she said? Sure.
But if we step back and take a look at it, men have long been ridiculed for going into dance in general, and ballet specifically. In many cases that ridicule came in the form of being called gay.
Now jump to today's environment with its increased awareness of—and attention to—bullying in all forms. A women in her position mocking a 6-year-old boy on national television, particularly the heir to the UK throne, is gonna get some justifiable pushback.
Bottom line for me is that she played into outdated stereotypes and there was no legitimate need for her to do so. |
