| I had no interest, but a friend just recommended very highly. I like plays, including slow, talky ones. Any thoughts? TIA. | |

| I'm asking how posters felt about the movie Betrayal with Patricia Hodge, Jeremy Irons and Ben Kingsley because I remember liking it. I also saw the Daniel Craig Betrayal and liked it, but less. I think I actually like the play although it's not a popular opinion right now on ATC. What affects me the most in Betrayal is how the two best friends feel about one another. And I think that moving in reverse serves the material and its emotional resonance well. | |

| The movie, directed by David Jones, is actually quite good. Unfortunately, it has yet to be released on DVD. | |

| I like the play a lot, and I liked the first Broadway production a lot. I haven't seen the movie in a long time, but I remember liking it a lot, and my memory is that it was well-received by the critics. It's perhaps surprising but Pinter's plays seem to work well as movies. I base this on The Homecoming and Betrayal. I haven't been able to see the films of The Caretaker and The Birthday Party, but it does seem that both were well-received and are generally highly regarded. There used to be a few scenes from the former on youtube, and they were terrific. And how great is it that EMI finally released the live recording they did in London of the original cast of The Caretaker? They sat on it for decades, having decided it did not work as a recording, then they perhaps forgot that it even existed, and then they found it and issued it. It's fantastic, although I suppose you have to like such things. Around the same time, they also released the live recording they did of The Entertainer with the original London cast, which they had also decided didn't work after they recorded it. These are the kinds of things that make life worth living for me. |

| No production I've seen has ever matched the original. Raul Julia, Roy Schneider, and Blythe Danner were a brilliant team. Bothom line, though? It's not a very good play. | |

| Not about the original Broadway production, which was excellent. But I think BETRAYAL is a wonderful play, compelling and beautifully written. | |

| The woman confuses me in the play. Especially since I think she was based on Antonia Fraser, with whom Pinter had an affair and then whom he managed to marry. So Pinter’s sort of Jerry. But he wrote the play with it not working out. Hmm. The woman in the play seems too lacking in conviction. I wonder how Bette Davis would’ve played it? (My rule of thumb when considering a woman’s role that seems ungrounded in motive.) The midpoint reversal with the husband makes the play interesting. The movie is excellent; the two actors are perfection; the actress falls short because of the role’s passivity. |

| I have been wondering this also. I saw the Daniel Craig/Rachel Weisz version, and I thought it was very boring and lifeless. I don't have a lot of Pinter experience, so I don't know if my reaction was to that production or to the material. | |

| I saw the Daniel Craig version and slept through most of it, but this production is just beautiful. If you like Pinter, you will never see a better production, and the three actors are pitch perfect throughout. Made a Hiddleston fan of me. | |

| But it's also worth noting that, at least from what i've seen and read of Pinter, Betrayal is by FAR his most mainstream play. So liking or not liking this, or being bored or thrilled by it, is not quite a reflection of how one will like his other plays and liking his others playings doesn't mean you'll love Betrayal. | |

| That's a very good point! It's way more accessible than his other plays. And it gets done a lot. | |
