Casting change in 2020 Waiting for Godot at TFANA
Posted by: LynnB 09:51 am EDT 08/29/19

TFANA subscribers got the following email yesterday from artistic director Jeffrey Horowitz, which combines the news that the previously announced cast is unavailable with the first announcement of who will direct the production:

"Today we announce that due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Michael Shannon and Paul Sparks will not be able to participate in TFANA’s 2020 production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. We're excited to announce that Godot will be directed by Arin Arbus, TFANA’s former Associate Artistic Director and now Resident Director.
"Michael and Paul, so memorable in our 2014 production of Ionesco’s The Killer, were excited to reunite for Godot and to work with Arin on the play. We look forward to future collaborations with these extraordinarily fine actors.
"Arin Arbus won an OBIE Award for her 2017 TFANA staging of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of our Teeth and recently won acclaim for her Broadway production of Terrence Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, starring Shannon and Audra McDonald. We are thrilled for Arin, who has directed some of TFANA's most celebrated productions, to take on Waiting for Godot."
"New casting will be announced this fall. We are excited to share Waiting for Godot with you at Polonsky Shakespeare Center April 25 through May 17, 2020. Thank you for subscribing to our 2019–2020 season. "

Anyone have any insight into why both Shannon and Sparks are now unavailable, or thoughts on who might replace them?

From Variety:

"Michael Shannon has been cast to play self-made millionaire and former Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss in HBO’s “The Untitled Showtime Lakers Project” pilot, based on the Jeff Pearlman book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.”

The series, which chronicles the professional and personal lives of the 1980s-era Lakers, is an hour-long drama executive produced by Adam McKay, who will direct the pilot. Kevin Messick will executive produce. Max Borenstein will write and executive produce. Jim Hecht is a co-writer and exec producer on the project. Jason Shuman and Scott Stephens are listed as executive producers, and Rodney Barnes is a co-executive producer."

My guess is that there may only be a scheduling conflict for one of them but they don't want to do the show without each other since they've worked together so often in the past.

Thanks to both of you. That makes sense.
