"Filmmaker Richard Linklater, whose ambitious 2014 film Boyhood spanned the course of 12 years and was nominated for six Oscars, is directing a new multi-year movie that will star Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein, multiple sources tell Collider."

I would wonder why say it's a "multi-year" movie if it isn't related to Boyhood's filming? Many movies have plots that span more than one year.

To me, the article makes it quite clear that the movie of MERRILY will be filmed over the course of a number of years, like BOYHOOD, even though it doesn't say that in exactly those words. I suspect that maybe Linklater will not take a full 20 years to film it, but probably at least 10 or 12, to make the characters' aging realistic.

It's really not necessary, except for being a gimmick. I hear movie makeup is pretty good these days.

Not the same as a boy aging into young adulthood, which was important to Boyhood.

I see your point, and I don't necessarily disagree, but I would say the "gimmick" itself is quite a powerful marketing hook, as it was for BOYHOOD.

It would be a better hook to be able to say the actors got younger over those years, like the characters do.

"It would be a better hook to be able to say the actors got younger over those years, like the characters do."

Ha! Indeed :-)

As a friend pointed out, you take a big risk when making a movie over several years, hoping that nothing bad is going to happen to any of the principals. It wasn't exactly the same situation with BOYHOOD, because that was a fictional story and also it was made in chronological order, rather than reverse, so they could have written out any actor who had died (heaven forbid) or become unavailable for some reason.

Again, that doesn't say he's filming it over multiple years, just that like Boyhood the film spans multiple years. In the case of Boyhood it spans and was filmed over multiple years, but you're inferring something from the way that the article is written that it doesn't say.

I mean, you're both right to some extent. The way the article is written implies that it will be filmed over many years, in the same way that "Boyhood" was. Reducing it to "the films spans multiple years" is not true to the spirit of the reference; knowing Linklater's body of work, which has delighted in telling stories that span decades (see also the "Before" trilogy), we have to go out of our way to presume that the way the film spans time will *only* be in the body of the story, rather than the process as well.

At the same time, the article does not specify exactly how long the filming will take place, and 20 years seems a notably long time, considering that the only comparable span of time is in the "Before" trilogy, which resulted in three films, rather than one. Considering that Linklater is nearly 60, a 20 year filming span is questionably ambitious, even if we exclude other factors that make banking on 2039 as a good time to release obscure musical movies seem optimistic.

"Filmmaker Richard Linklater, whose ambitious 2014 film Boyhood spanned the course of 12 years and was nominated for six Oscars, is directing a new multi-year movie that will star Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein...."

"The play takes place over the course of 20 years, and sources say that Linklater plans to stay true to that timeline."

"Sources say the film is being shot in reverse chronological order, as the play and musical end when the characters are in their mid-20s and just embarking on their entertainment careers."

Do you get it yet?

Do you get that nothing there actually says he's filming it over the course of 20 years? And technically the show takes place in reverse chronological order so that would imply he's filming from old to young, to film over 20 years he'd be filming in chronological order. This article is so badly written that you can't actually determine what he's planning to do.

"Do you get that nothing there actually says he's filming it over the course of 20 years?"

No, I do not "get" that. Or, rather, I don't agree.

"Sources say the film is being shot in reverse chronological order, as the play and musical end when the characters are in their mid-20s and just embarking on their entertainment careers."

It's true that this sentence is confusingly written. Still, it's completely clear that, of course, Linklater will start filming with the scene set on the rooftop in 1957, then move forward to the scenes set later in the '50s, then the scenes in the sixties, and so on and so on. Which is actually chronological order in terms of the passage of time in real life, but reverse order in terms of the way the story is told.

To me, the most confusing part of the article is that it says Ben Platt will be playing "the lead," which I guess would have to be considered Franklin Shepard, whereas I strongly suspect he will actually be playing Charley Kringas.
