Today marks actor Elliott Gould's 81st birthday. I just happened to come across this brief interview, done for the Yiddish Book Center's Wexler Oral History Project. There's much more to the interview, but I felt compelled to post this snippet of how Mr. Gould first saw, heard, and met Ms. Streisand. He opens by saying he was in the chorus of "Irma La Douce" and went to audition for "I Can Get It For You Wholesale," told he didn't stand a chance. He summarizes his initial impression of Streisand as "brilliant," and mentions that, when finished her audition, she asked if anyone wanted her number. Gould says he consciously went over the number again and again in his head (so as not to forget it) and, subsequently, called her. You all know the rest.....
It's a charming little blurb and quite apropos today on Gould's birthday: a neat throwback to the start of two impressive talents. Happy Birthday, Mr. Gould !!! |
