If Prince were still here, there's a good chance that he would not go to see it. He wrote in Sense of Occasion that he rarely went to see revivals of the musicals he had directed. "Excellent as I'm sure so many of them are, I retain an impression of the original, and often I miss the metaphor which informed the original production."
Of course, he might still have been pleased that Company was still getting done, but that seems like something that would please Sondheim more. Whether this version would please Furth is something we'll never know. |
