I've loved this song since I heard Mr Harnick sing it in the evening he does with his wife. It makes sense that the tone of this song was not quite right for its position late in the show. But when I saw the current revival of FIDDLER, it struck me - as it always does when I think about it - that Act opens with 2 pages of dialogue - a monolog for Tevye, and then a scene that leads to 'Now I have Everything'. While the trashing of his daughter's wedding by the Russians is not as big an event as the expulsion from Anataevka at the end of Act 2 - its still a BIG event.
I would love to see a production that was allowed to try inserting WHEN MESSIAH COMES at the top of Act 2 - a bit of restructure, cutting of Tevye's monolog, a tweak here and there to the lyrics - and the 2d act of the musical would get to music much quicker - and music for Teye. (and no - I don't think I'm the first person who ever thought of this. Maybe it has been trued ...) My ten cents.
