For some reason, I hadn't realized it was actually based on the (B'way) play. I had assumed it was the same tightly focused era of Garland's third act through a different prism. It seems the screenplay has used the play as a starting point only. It's PG-13, revealing perhaps. I was just discussing "Topsy Turvy" two days ago (a Paris theater movie; nostalgia) and noted the bio of Gilbert and Sullivan was an R (a few breasts, drug paraphernalia). Intriguing that Garland's last troubling days are somehow more appropriate for teens than the story of the men who wrote "Pirates of Penzance." The capricious nature of film ratings is a far bigger topic, and not for this board. But still...
