...where some of the people who saw her performance in the theatre tell us that we had to be there and that the filmed production was no where near an accurate representation of the in-theatre experience but SOME people who'd seen both tell us it was. I guess there'll only be one way for me to find out. No way I could miss both Lenk and LuPone doing Sondheim.

I am of the camp that Imelda in GYPSY, in the theatre, was sublime....one of the finest performances I have ever seen. On video....whole different story. With COMPANY, sadly the show sounds just as lifeless and tinny on record as it did at The Gielgud. I hope the transfer with Lenk and a new cast (save for Lupone) will breath life into this otherwise dull revival. It should have worked and I was so looking forward to it...but what a disappointment it was here in London.

| So interesting how people feel differently about shows. This production got uniformly rave reviews in London, sold very well, and each of the three times I saw it, I walked away very satisfied. I can see not liking it, but lifeless? That is tougher for me to understand. | |

My partner and I both agreed that had that been the first time we had heard the score we would have never listened to it again. After the reviews came out he went back to see if anything changed his mind. It didn't. And I could not imagine sitting through it a second painful time. Yes, lifeless and dull and it pains me to say it. I hope that something makes the NY version click it into gear. And those reviews? Sondheim is GOD and must be adored if you are a London critic. Them's the rules here.

Because like you, if this had been my first exposure to it, I might have enjoyed it (not coming in understand what the show actually can be and how often the changes they made sabotaged many of what's brilliant about it and renders many songs and scenes to make little sense) but I doubt I'd have rush to get the CD. This is my fear often with Sondheim revivals, especially British ones.
