A new cell phone wrinkle
Posted by: aleck 08:11 pm EDT 09/01/19

The other night the guy sitting next to me kept turning on his cell phone screen and fiddling with it. Finally I turned to him and said "Could you please put that away." He looked at me indignantly and said "That's how I control my hearing aids. "

Oh, geez.

I see that they are now offering some type of closed captioning device. How does that work? On an ever-glowing cell phone or some other screen device that lights up the audience members all around?

Isn’t there a way to reverse the screen

So it’s dark with only words light. To be honest, I only know how to do that in kindle, but I’ve seen others use the feature in other apps and I think phone itself.

Isn’t this exactly why theaters offer their own assisted-listening devices, which are meant to supplant personal hearing aids?

I don’t want light shining in my face throughout an entire performance, whether or not it’s an accommodation. I would ask house management to move me or refund me.

Wonderful for those with hearing loss that can't be helped by assisted-listening or hearing aids:

Yes, my husband uses hearing aids, but when we go to a live theatre event in NY, he opts for the theatre's assisted-listening devices (and, of course, removes his personal ones). He has the app on his iPhone that regulates volume, too, but simply finds it less intrusive on the experience (and his fellow audience members) to use the device that most theatres provide free of charge.

Every Broadway theater now works with a company called GalaPro, which has created an app that anybody can download on their personal smart phone or iPad, and you can read the script in real time as the show unfolds. The company says that they've created it the app so that the screen is glare-free. It's designed for the person using it.

subtitles at the Met

I think the subtitles at the Metropolitan Opera are well designed for that: on the back of the chair in front of you.
I couldn't see the subtities of the person next to me. It was a very low light but readable.

But that kind of rewiring wouldn't happen in a Broadway theater until a major renovation.

I’ll believe it’s glare-free when I see it...or, I guess, don’t see it.

I don't know about doing it on an iPhone, but when I was in Japan I went a Kabuki show and they had caption devices for people who didn't speak Japanese. I was shocked and pleased to see that the screen was built in such a way that you could only see it from straight on, and if you were to the side of it, it appeared dark, or low enough light that you wouldn't notice unless you were looking at it. My dad was sitting next to me and he had is own device. I could barely see the screen! I'm not quite sure how it works, or if the same effect can be achieved on an iPhone when the screen isn't build for it - but I can attest to the fact that the technology is out there, and it's effective!

When I was at Oklahoma, there was a couple in the floor seats who were using some kind of device that it seemed like they were using to read the text from. It wasn't a standard iphone or ipad/kindle/etc. It didn't look like it was emitting that much light, although they were sitting on the opposite side of the room from me so it's hard to be sure. When the house lights were up, it wasn't noticeable, but now that I think about it, during the darker portions, there didn't seem to be light coming from that area, either.

I wonder how flip-phones will be affected if the user forgets to turn them off, they are set to ring at full volume, and if they are enclosed in a Yondr pouch for Freestyle Love Supreme which starts next Friday.

No one in the theatre will have to be concerned about my wife and I regarding our phone. Having been involved in theatre for 40 years, we have to much respect for others to have our flip phone ring during a performance. It is turned off while waiting in line to enter the theatre. Calling these devices "smart" phones is a misnomer for those who have them and use them in the theatre. They should be called "dumb" phones because of the dumb owners.

Hi Mike again; Our flip phone will take photos. Sorry, I forgot that it did. I always use my camera for taking pictures. These phones preceded today's smart phones and got their name because of the cover that you had to "flip" open to use the phone. They are small, lightweight, affordable, and very rugged.

Hi Michael; We have one. A flip phone is a portable phone about one third the size of the average smart phone. It has a small keyboard and screen and can call anywhere in the world, just like a smart phone can. It also has internet capability but cannot take pictures. An average plan costs about ten dollars a month and you accumulate free usage hours every month. They are great for people like us who are not on the phone everyday.

People still use that style of phone. I'm pretty sure Verizon still offers them.

they are especially popular with those who employ "burner phones."

I'm pretty sure the ones Verizon still offers allow the ringer to be silenced. But that's another song.

Are you back to trolling about this?

The answer is: The same way they are affected at any of the other events that have been using the pouches for quite a while now. I seriously doubt much if any of the audience for FLS will have flip phones.
