| Spending so much time on BAT OUT OF HELL, which is not on Broadway, and is dying at the box office, isn't helpful to his argeument, | |

| This is a mindblowingly fatuous article, I have to say. All the arguments have been made elsewhere far better and more cogently. Sigh .... | |

| But his judgment of musicals has never been his strength. And since he's 94 maybe we can cut him a little slack for some logic lapses. Hmm. 94 is starting to look young! |

| Having heard the best songs in the first half, I left at intermission. I rather liked Lena Hall butthe show was not Broadway caliber. IMHO natch. |

| Like the last Meat Loaf-associated vehicle -- Rockabye Hamlet. Unforgettable. I still get flashes of an entrance Meat Loaf made down a curving staircase that encircled the stage. Horrifying. And not in a good way. |

| a few good ideas here but it reads like a transcript of something he made a recording of late and night, and then didn't bother to flesh out his thoughts and work with an editor. the quality of the writing undermines his purported thesis. which I agree with 100%. |

| What a strange article, mentioning the lack of songs to hum and the lack of a new musical from an 89 year old writer criticized for lack of hummable songs in the same paragraph. | |

| Clearly the theater owners and/or producers knew it would bomb on broadway. And I consider tootsie a crappy musical. Hadestown score outshines even Andre. We are due for another good musical comedy like producers and book of Mormon |

| And, of course, Steinman - and a good deal of the songs in 'Bat out of Hell' - started in theater. He recycled them as pop hits but they were intended to be show tunes, 50 years ago. | |

| I was about to make the same point. I have no intention of 'defending' Bat Out of Hell, but the most cursory research on Simon's part would reveal that a lot of the material was always intended for a musical theatre production. | |

| Right, I haven't seen it but have no doubt it's something of a hot mess, but it's the hot mess musical Steinman's been working on for years! | |

| JohnPopa, I did not know much about the show until you mentioned this. I did not realize that he literally wrote some of the songs in 1968! It's impressive that he has been working on this for so long. | |
