Regarding Michele as Fanny Brice, I think the actress was ill-served by the poorly written and conceived storyline on GLEE in which her character was cast in this role for a major Broadway revival. Though Michele was seen in a few moments from FUNNY GIRL, during which she was basically doing a Streisand impression, it was never clear from the story telling if this was meant to convey how inexperienced and relatively untrained the Rachel character was within the world of GLEE or if this was indeed Michele's idea of how to play Fanny. No other characters ever commented on this and I think we're told that Rachel's reviews are good. Perhaps Ryan Murphy, or whomever was in charge of GLEE by that time, thought there was only one way to play Fanny and directed Michele to turn her Streisand up to eleven.
Lea Michele might be an excellent Fanny Brice and she's probably capable of delivering a performance that isn't Streisand's. We just don't have any idea at this point. |
