"Cabaret" in Vienna - including "all songs ever written for the show or movie"
Posted by: tmwctd 04:00 pm EDT 09/03/19

That's how the Volksoper has described their production, starting next week. Any thoughts on whether any songs could be on a collision course or on any you would really be surprised to hear?

Reminding me of our discussions of the Merman numbers for "Dolly."

I love "World Take Me Back," Herman's great Dolly song for Merman, but it's hard for me to fathom how it fits in with "Before the Parade Passes By." They are two entreaties -- invocations -- to find fresh reasons to get up every morning; when they were in the same act it had to seem as if Dolly was a woman subjected to recurring epiphanies.

Has anyone ever done a DROOD with all the songs written?

When the Roundabout revived THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD a few years back, I wished that they'd done a performance or two that included all the possible combinations of resolutions, instead of having the audience vote. There are a lot of those variations that I've never seen performed and some of the choices seem to be tried and true ones that audiences pick a lot of the time. The way I'd envisioned it would be that they would, for example, reveal one character as the murderer and, when that section ends, reset to the cue and reveal another character as the murderer. It could be that with all the combinations of lovers and killers and detectives that doing this would take entirely too long and the audience wouldn't be interested, but, as a fan of the material, I would have reveled in the chance to see some of these variations.

Years ago, I did a production where, after the last performance we invited the audience to stay, and we did every killer. The audience reaction was really terrific.

We didn't do all the lovers, because that would have taken forever. And other than a couple of lines leading up to the song, they're all pretty much the same. The confessions are all pretty unique.

We did something similar when we did it at my college (in 1990!) but we didn't give the audience at the last performance a choice! After every confession Durdles came out an improvised another segue to the next murderer! When you're only doing 4-5 performances, it's a fun way to end.

That is fresking wonderful, and I wish I could have seen it.

But don't you find the incestous lovers at least a bit different from the others? 😄

“If You Could See Her” vs. “Meeskite”

Off the top of my head, I recall a tune called “Meeskite” (meaning “Ugly,” I think?) being written as a replacement for “If You Could See Her,” and similarly meant to be sung with the performer in the gorilla suit. That certainly seems a “collision course” the likes of which you speak.

Both songs were in the original production

It wasn’t a replacement.

Nevermind. Alan beat me to it.

Not at all. Both songs were in the original version, which is still licensed for production. Both songs are heard on the original Broadway cast recording, the original London cast recording, and the 1986 London revival cast recording. "Meeskite" is sung near the end of Act One but Herr Schultz. "If You Could See Her" is sung in Act Two by the Master of Ceremonies.

Perhaps you're remembering that when the show was in previews in 1966, the decision was made to replace the word Jewish in "If You Could See Her" with the word meeskite.

Yes, they probably don't really mean every song ever written for the show.

And they probably will include "I Don't Care Much," which wasn't written for the show. :)

It wasn't, but the tune was in the Entr'acte.

Yes, that is very odd, but I wonder if somehow it ended up in the published score and the licensed materials, but was not performed on Broadway or in London since it's not on the recordings. Of course, it could have been cut for the recordings, but it does raise the question.
