Too bad, though, that in this production, they speed up the tempo of "Ribbons Down My Back" to the point where Herman's interesting rhythms all have to be re-invented and backphrased. A waste of a beautiful song that's being given the "the audience will get bored with a ballad" treatment. Not much better with "It Only Takes A Millisecond."

I saw the Buckley cast a few weeks ago and loved the production and the performances. But I missed the sexiness and allure and beauty of Herman's ballads. A few metronome makings less wouldn't have killed anyone.

When I saw it on Broadway, it wasn't just the "Ribbons" tempo. The staging was relentlessly busy. She never stopped moving. Every bit of sensuality was gone from the song.

And in addition to also not particularly liking the choices made with "It Only Takes a Moment," it was most disappointing to see the moment with Minnie Fay just before the song, which can be (and has been) so touching in other productions, rushed through as if it were meaningless. Which it pretty much was at the performance I saw, but it shouldn't be.

Personally, I found the production generally too relentless. It was like being hit on the head again and again for two hours and change.

"Personally, I found the production generally too relentless. It was like being hit on the head again and again for two hours and change."

My take on this: it felt entirely presentational. Everything pitched out, many crosses downstage to underscore zingers, less intimacy established between players in the first act. It was built into Dolly's entrance, when Midler walked down and threw up her hands to acknowledge the house. Peters did almost the same thing, obviously, though the Peters iteration (I saw all the same supporting folk, Garber switched in of course) seemed slightly less so as the evening wore on. Peters exerts a different energy, and I suspect Buckley did on the road. I took to be Zak's reading of the material's strength -- sock it to the back of the house to make it land -- and rolled with it. But you're not the only person I know who found its drive too pushy by half. A good friend who loves big, bright musical theater said it wore him out.

I’ve never seen anyone literally run a marathon every night. I got tired for that little cherub.

Ribbons didn’t bother me

It fit her spirit, I thought.

But I agree about Moment. Especially the ending. Ya gotta milk it a bit. Let the audience “ahhhh”.
