When I saw it on Broadway, it wasn't just the "Ribbons" tempo. The staging was relentlessly busy. She never stopped moving. Every bit of sensuality was gone from the song.
And in addition to also not particularly liking the choices made with "It Only Takes a Moment," it was most disappointing to see the moment with Minnie Fay just before the song, which can be (and has been) so touching in other productions, rushed through as if it were meaningless. Which it pretty much was at the performance I saw, but it shouldn't be.
Personally, I found the production generally too relentless. It was like being hit on the head again and again for two hours and change. |
