I am curious how the end crowd will be handled on Broadway. In London, I don't believe that there is a union minimum in the West End the same way that there is for Broadway. Several years ago, I saw a show there that was a jukebox musical of the songs of Take That (the group that Gary Barlow, the composer of Finding Neverland, is part of). They had a large children's chorus for just one song, but apparently, they can pay minimally there. When Matilda was playing, it was revealed that each of the London Matildas was only getting paid around $300 - $350 a week.
I don't know what the Broadway rule is for roles that have no speaking. I don't know if they have to pay each of the end performers the weekly minimum. I know that stagehands can be asked to wear costumes (and get paid for doing so), but I don't know if they can have stagehands perform who are not actually doing stagehand work while they are on stage -- I would guess Actors Equity would frown upon that unless this type of role is not considered within their purview anyway.
I believe (but could be wrong) that understudies can appear on stage in this type of role without receiving extra pay because they are getting paid the Broadway minimum already. But there probably wouldn't be more than 3 understudies (and possibly only two).
