| THE CIRCLE SERIES Teams up with LAByrinth Theater Company Members To Present Vivid Story of Three Female Actors Sacrificing All for their Dreams LADIES IN WAITING By Elizabeth Canavan September 9 at 7pm Circle in the Square The Circle Series is back after its final reading of the summer and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down. Theater fans have seen everything from a clown show about the end of days to a queer fantasia about Abraham Lincoln, and can expect that same variety moving into September. On Monday, September 9, Circle in the Square Theatre School (Susan Frankel, COO), Pigasus Institute (Zachary Spicer, CEO) and Rachel Shuey will present LAByrinth company member Elizabeth Canavan’s Ladies in Waiting, which puts a spotlight on understudies waiting for their chance to go on. The staged reading, held at Broadway’s Circle in the Square, is open to the public. Admission is a suggested donation of $20 for adults and $10 for seniors and students, with all proceeds benefiting Circle in the Square Theatre School. In Ladies in Waiting, three women unveil the lengths to which they’ve gone—sacrificing love, family, and security—to pursue their dreams of becoming a star. As events unfold, their actions are held up to the cultural backdrop of the #MeToo movement and the entertainment industry’s long history of sexual assault and abuse. Producer Zachary Spicer says about LAB, “Rachel and I have both worked with LAByrinth and are deeply supportive of their mission to generate ensemble work that interrupts the racial status quo and advocates for diverse voices to be heard, as evidenced by their recent ‘Installation on America’ at Cherry Lane Theatre.” Playwright Elizabeth Canavan and three members of the Circle Series cast (Kelley Rae O’Donnell, Neil Tyrone Pritchard, and Kara Young) are LAByrinth Theater Company members and continue their work on Ladies in Waiting, following its first reading at LAB’s annual Barn Series in January. Additional casting will be announced prior to the reading. Canavan’s depiction of the theater industry in Ladies in Waiting will be all-too-real for many performers in the audience. Programming the piece was a purposeful step by producers to showcase the range of work they plan to continue hosting at Circle in the Square Theatre—work that brings together the community in a fun environment, but also work that won’t let you off the hook. “Let’s just say that no one in the theater industry or otherwise will leave this play without having strong feelings, and we want that,” says producer Rachel Shuey. Ladies in Waiting will play at Circle in the Square Theatre on Monday, September 9th at 7pm and is preceded by a social hour at 6pm. Admission is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. About The Circle Series Giving theatre lovers a new option to spend a Monday night on Broadway, The Circle Series brings together the New York theatrical community and provides a creative outlet for Circle in the Square Theatre School students and alumni by showcasing new and developing work on Circle in the Square’s Broadway Stage. The Circle Series is presented by the Pigasus Institute and produced by Rachel Shuey in partnership with the Circle in the Square Theatre School. All donations benefit Circle in the Square Theatre School.
